Lady Broncs have success on road trip

The varsity girls basketball team hit the highway heading north on 395 to Bishop to compete against a very competitive Lady Broncos squad on Jan. 17.

Playing with much intensity, the Lady Broncs had a successful road trip in picking up the 58-48 victory.

Head coach Don Hazard said, “The game at Bishop was tough. They pressed us the entire game and Bishop was ahead 30-28 at half time. I told the girls whoever played with the most intensity the second half would end up winning. They (Kern Valley) played really hard and won the game 58-48. I was really happy with their effort.”

Jamie Duran led the team in scoring with 33 points. Duran dropped in 24 points from the floor and made nine of her free throw shots for her points. She would grab seven rebounds, have four steals and hand out two assists.

Yasin scored three points, including a free throw. She pulled down a team-high 16 rebounds, collected one steal, recorded one block, and dished out nine assists, while Mikayla Harris added eight points, including a three pointer. Harris also had five rebounds, was credited with four steals, had three assists, and recorded one block.

Katie Clifton scored two points, grabbed 10 rebounds and handed out one assist, while Tori Barnum scored two points and was credited with one rebound.

Katelyn Wallace dropped in four points, was credited with nine rebounds, had one steal, and handed out four assists, while Nicole Sutton had one assist and two rebounds.

Closing out the stats for the Lady Broncs was Gillian Amos who was credited with three rebounds.

Previous action on Jan. 13: the Lady Broncs on their home court took on Cal City and never gave them chance.

The defensive pressure by Kern Valley was too much as they allowed the Lady Ravens just 15 points.

The defense was ruthless in the second half as they limited Cal City to just four points in the half.

The first quarter Kern Valley led 17-6. When the teams went into the break, Kern Valley held a 36-11 advantage over the Lady Ravens. By the end of the third quarter the margin had ballooned to 59-15. The Lady Broncs ended the game with the 60-15 win.

Hazard said, “I was happy with our defense against Cal City and we were up 36-11 at half time. Our scoring was balanced and the team played well together.”

Dolly Anzaldo led the team in scoring with 16 points, including a pair of shots from behind the three-point arc.

Two other Kern Valley players scored in double figures. Marissa Witten and Duran each added 10 points. Duran hit from long-distance on one of her shots. Yasin dropped in seven points, including a three-pointer, while Wallace and Harris each scored four points. Barnum and Clifton rounded out the scoring for the Lady broncs with two points apiece.

On the boards, Wallace led the Kern Valley team in rebounding with seven. Amos and Clifton each grabbed five boards, while Duran and Barnum had four rebounds.

Witten recorded three boards, while Anzaldo and Yasin were credited with a pair of rebounds each.

Anzaldo was credited with six steals to lead Kern Valley. Yasin had five steals, while Witten recorded four steals. Duran had three steals, while Harris and Clifton were credited with a pair of steals each.

Yasin handed out five assists to lead the Lady Broncs. Duran dished off four assists, while Anzaldo and Clifton each had three assists. Amos, Barnum and Harris were credited with one assist each. Yasin and Wallace each had two blocks in the game.

Kern Valley faced off against Frazier Mountain on Tuesday to close out the first half of HDL action.

They will be on the road Friday to take on Rosamond to start the second half and their run at the CIF playoffs.
