James Lee Cudahy, 27, of Weldon, was sentenced to four years in Wasco State Prison by Judge Michael Bush in Superior Court on Wednesday, Jan 4. Cudahy entered a no contest plea on charges of 2nd degree burglary and receiving stolen property.

A third charge of possessing controlled substance paraphernalia was dismissed. Bush explained that in light of the nature of Cudahy’s prior arrests, prison time and current parole status, the four-year sentence was imposed.

Cudahy’s attorney, Public Defender, Timothy Blenner had no comment regarding the proceedings.

On Thursday, Sept. 8, at 6:22 a.m., Sheriff Deputies were dispatched to the KOA Campground on Hwy 178 in Weldon responding to a burglary call. On arriving, Senior Deputy Daures Stephens and Deputy B. Pierce were approached by a campground employee who told them that someone walked into the KOA office and attempted to steal a can of money left out on the counter for donations to The Cancer Society. The employee told deputies that another employee went after the suspect in a car.

According to Stephens, an employee of the campground was in an upstairs room and heard a noise downstairs in the lobby. When he came down he startled the suspect and the thief fled on foot. The other employee then got into his car and took chase.

While deputies were interviewing the witness, Senior Deputy Stephens saw a vehicle pulled over on the shoulder of Hwy 178 approximately 100 yards away from the KOA entrance. Stephens started walking toward the car and saw someone leaning into the passenger side window. The car then pulled back onto the road and headed towards Stephens. It turned into the campground, and Stephens spoke to the driver. He asked him what the stop was about, and who the person was he was talking to. Stephens stated that the driver told him that he was stopped by a man named James Cudahy. Cudahy asked about the Sheriff’s cars at the campground. Deputy Stephens asked which direction Cudahy went. The driver didn’t know.

Stephens and Pierce searched the surrounding yards and businesses. They went to the Prince Ranch and asked if Cudahy was there. According to a man at the ranch, Cudahy was known around the area, but had not been seen that morning. Stephens crossed the highway and found footprints that would have been made by someone running in and out of the yards. “They lead to the place where the car had pulled over, as if the runner had started walking.” Stephens said. Then the tracks turned and when Stephens followed them, he found Cudahy hiding behind a house.

Cudahy was taken into custody on suspicion of burglary. As Stephens walked Cudahy back to the campground, he was “acting strangely.” Stephens said. When they reached the patrol car, a search of Cudahy’s person found a syringe and other drug paraphernalia. Cudahy was taken to the Kern Valley Substation and arrested for first degree burglary, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

" I have no sympathy for this guy. He is a thief who needs to be taught a lesson. This is a good example of what meth has done to our community. He should have gone out and got an education for himself because it is FREE for low income. Now instead of this guy living off the goverment out of jail, we will be supporting him in prison. "

" This man got four years for burglarizing, but there are people doing worse crimes and get off with a slap on the hand! This young man yes messed up but messing up in life is what makes you learn and makes you stronger. The last time I seen his name in the paper was for a reprint the sun had to do because he was false accused of having drugs. NOT FOR BREAKING THE LAW!!! AND HE WAS A GREAT FATHER TO HIS SON. Your just like the people from the sun. TALK before you even know!!! "

" space doesn't allow me much time in each post, but while James is so far from perfect, and I know he has a record, my memory of him as a boy and a young man is someone that had to much potential. He could have done so much.. In fact, he still can. his life is not over. Start now.Sometimes, when you have gone thru what he has, you can come out the other side, so strong.Try again, James.. I'm on your side! "

" I watched James grow up. As a child and a young man, he was and is smart and talented. An excellent basketball player. He is not perfect and had a less than perfect home life growing up. He was at a distinct disadvantage. One weekend at my home, I hated sending him home, not sure he had heat or food at home. However, in our life, we all have choices to make, and sadly, he has made some poor ones. I think he can still do the right thing.. again, a choice. "

I am sure if others were to look into your past, your closet, there would be a story (at least one) you are not proud of. If I recall correctly reading the Bible, even Jesus didn't do everything right. "

" You have got to be kidding me! You people are defending him and condoning his actions. Says alot about your character. Using meth and burglarizing homes is not trying to do the right thing in life, get a grip, unless of course you are a tweeker. "

" GOOD FATHER??? This was his THIRD charge of possession and not only was he seen by the employee of KOA, he was caught hiding behind the house.I have seen his name several times in the police blotter. Yah, a model citizen for sure! His kids are better off without him. Good thing he didn't break into my place. "

" This is typical of the sun and George Stahl. They go to the court hearing and if it isn't juicy enough they just embellish a little. Why not it isn't their family member or friend. "

" This is absolutely crazy. I think if you guys are going to waste your time doing a story on CUDAHY you might as well waist your time writing about every other criminal in this town. Why is it anyones business on what he did wrong. This was a young man that yes needed help but was trying to do the right thing in life. He was a great father, Its sad he wont see his kid(s) grow up. Doesn't this man have a right to confidentiality?? I believe this story should have never been wrote!!! its wrong and sad! "
