The DUI provided Ashburn an opportunity to “come out” of that “closet” in which so many gays live. Ashburn has served the community and continues to do so. Driving under the influence is not commendable, but neither that nor his being gay diminishes his service to the community AND neither changes the person he was and is. Ashburn was the same person while members of this community were working with him – he has not changed.
Some persons in this community continue to think my involvement in collecting food donations for three local charities is somehow “condemnable” because I’m gay and an atheist. Is the publisher of this paper one of those persons? Other citizens serving this community do drink alcohol and some of them are gay. I wish all GLBT persons in this community would publicly affirm their sexual orientation, so the publisher of this paper and other community members might become more aware that GLBT persons do make contributions to the quality of life in this community.

Editor’s note: The publisher’s statement, “What happened to the Roy Ashburn we knew?” was a reference to Ashburn’s arrest on DUI charges and his anti-equality voting record. It was not a statement condemning his sexual orientation.

In your rush to judgment you intimated I was a liberal. I'm not!
I believe you consider yourself a
Christian and I would never attempt to tell you otherwise.
I merely pointed out that your very judgmental and do a disservice to the Christian Community with your fire and brimstone zealotry.
I have always thought of Christians as those who were kind, considerate, non judgmental and those who spread Gods Word with respect and humility.
Apparently my quotes meant nothing to you. "

Who said, "Let him without sin cast the first stone"? I think it was your Boss. I think He also said, "Judge not lest you be judged".
I may be wrong in the exact wording of my quotes Truth, it's been a while since I've been to Church but you get the idea.
Just like overly strident Gay activists do a disservice to the Gay community you do a disservice to the Christian community. "

John. Mixed results. You seem kind and caring for your niece then go after Al and Celia pretty inappropriatly hard. All they want is fairness and equality. Why is that so hard to get? "

They know I don't agree with many of their beliefs as they disagree with many of mine yet we're friends.
They don't attribute my beliefs to a "hateful agenda" or accuse me of being a "closet Het."
You and I disagree on some issues yet I have never judged you as a person as you have judged me and others.
It could be some gays feel exclusion from the hetero community not because they are gay but because of their overt judgementalism. "

Thoughtful, educated, well balanced individuals realize one or two disagreeable individuals do not make up the feelings and beliefs of the entire group.
Only an insecure person with a deep seated bias, prejudice ?, would continue to denigrate a group based on the actions of a few.
A person who is comfortable in his or her skin and way of life does not need windmills to tilt.

Many of us have known for a long time that the most vocal opponents of Gay rights are themselves closet cases. Better to be out, open and healthy than closeted and unhappy. "

When Ashburn decided to drive drunk he gave up his right to be in Public Service.
My first accident investigation as a rookie Sheriffs Deputy was a drunk that rear ended a Semi Trailer.
His 3 year old baby's head was 1/2 way through the windshield.
Unfortunately I remember the kids. The decapitated little boy,the little girl the car rolled over and crushed, the 12 YO that lost an arm and bled to death.
Take your cheap shots at the Christians Al, PhD., but a drunk driver is nothing but a criminal. "

It's my opinion, formed from your letters, your a condescending egotist, who craves the limelight, and dislikes Christians.
I've never seen anyone protesting your atheism, yet you never miss a chance to take a cheap shot at Christians.
Why do you need to know what others do in their bedrooms? It's none of your business.
Like MOST, I'm comfortable in my sexuality and have no need to broadcast it. Aren't you comfortable?
You attitude is a disservice to the Gay community.
Ashburn is a victim if his drunkenness. "

Roy is an example of a common theme among self loathing closet cases, they almost always speak against homosexuality. Those who protest the most are screaming to the world that they are insecure. I long for a world where Roy and other Gay people have no fear of coming out and being who they are. "

Secondly, our elected rep will now have CB on his resume for ten years. It means he has a criminal background.
Many state workers, virtually all cops, teacher aids, and others have a specific clause in their contracts that they lose their jobs with a DUI.
He fired up a 2500 lb gun (A taxpayer state vehicle) that we own, and put OUR lives at risk. Fire him. "

As far as your "being attracted to the male animal". For one, ew. That's not an image I really need in my head. For two, it's normally people who get so freaked out about homosexuality who end up actually being attracted to the idea. You just seem to protest a bit too much, and people notice. "
