Vons stores remove items from shelves

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday announced a potentially massive recall of salad dressing, chip dip, soup mixes and other foods made with a commonly used food additive that may be contaminated with salmonella.

Safeway, Inc. said it was removing its Red Potato Salad with Dill products from its Vons and Pavilions stores. The additive, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, is used in thousands of foods but has not been linked to any illnesses. It currently presents a low risk to consumers, according to FDA officials. But the agency isn’t taking any chances. It has asked food producers to check inventories for items that used the recalled lots of the protein. To check if a food item has been recalled, go to www.foodsafety.gov.

" I've always found the Vons staff to be very friendly and helpful, not that I actually ever need much help. What I wish they would do is stop letting people with a ton of stuff go through the express lane. "

" I dont know about the rest of the residents here in KRV, but I am constantly annoyed at only having VONS as the 'large' supermarket in this valley. I appreciate Isabella Market, James Stores and Mt Mesa Markets but obviously they cannot provide the lower prices based on volume sales like Vons can. In this economoy, it is difficult to pay more for groceries at the smaller stores. I wish Vons management would visit Isabella Market & observe how friendly & helpful their staff is, the Vons staff could learn a few things. Especially the older female cashiers. "
