Travel Management Plan flawed
Re: “Negativity has no place” Letters, 2/3/10

Why would it be inappropriate for any organization to solicit comments from the public about negative impacts from motorized vehicles off paved roads in the National Forests, especially given the various Executive Orders to the Forest Service about minimizing conflicts between trail users?  These are legitimate public safety questions and solicitations which should be shared to inform the agency of user-conflict that multiple use trails have already caused.

The Forest Service policy, now enshrined in the Sequoia Travel Management Plan (TMP), encourages illegal trail building by legitimizing them through formal designation, which runs counter to the values of most Americans, which include preservation of the quiet solitude of the natural forest condition.

Allowing motorized trails in roadless areas by the TMP will likely preclude future wilderness designation and prevent creation of more wilderness, which Congress overwhelmingly and repeatedly supports.

The repeated illegal use of the Pacific Crest Trail by motorized vehicles has been reported by many citizens. You can see videos of the destruction by motorized vehicles at the following link. www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzE-PtIShyY&feature=channel.

One visitor reported to Sequoia ForestKeeper, stating, “I have encountered many very polite members of the motorcycle community but I have had run-ins with those who believe that all trails are for their use. The ruts they create in trails both legal and illegal are huge. I have twisted my ankle in deep ruts and avoid motorcycle trails.”

Other hikers reported environmental damage caused by motorized vehicles, continuous noise from vehicles while hiking, destruction by vehicle riders of barricades intended to prevent vehicle access, and verbal abuse and threats of physical harm from riders.

In addition to impacts on humans, there are adverse effects on critters, especially on the Pacific fisher, which does not tolerate noise well.

" Designating where vehicles can go in National Forests has been needed for a long time. The old situation of "go anywhere" is not sustainable, especially with the growth in vehicles. People are upset about this change but I think in time we will see that the use of national forests by motorcyclists (like me) and ATV riders depends on successful management and riders staying on routes. The era of "user-created" trails is over. The priority going forward is to reign in the bad apples so the sport has a better image and reputation. "

" Notice the absence of any response from marderosian.
He apparently does not feel the need to lower himself to the level of those who disagree with him.
His arrogance is only exceeded by his zealotry in attempting to close the forest to all human use.
Shortly after the Piute fire which destroyed a good portion of the forest they sued to protect I sent him an e-mail asking how we could work together to protect our forests from wild fires.
    He never responded.
I guess he doesn't want to soil himself associating or communicating with little people. "

" I've been a conservationist for 40 years. I've built trails, I've ridden horses, I've ridden quads and dirt bikes, I've hunted big game, I've hunt fowl, I've pulled foals when the mare couldn't deliver. I'm G.-D. sick and tired of Johnny come lately wannabes deciding that they can shut down all forest uses that they don't approve of. Take a hike SFK and don't look back. We don't want you, and we don't need you. "

" Give us the names of the people you claim have complained to you?
Personally, I don't believe you or Valerie Cassity.
Are you or any of your advisory group Forest Scientists?
Who funds your campaign against the FS?
Why was Cassity soliciting OHV complaints on the ForestKeeper website.
It disappeared when I asked about it in a Letter to the Editor.
The tone of your letter indicates your hubris.
It's my opinion there is nothing worse for humanity than arrogant zealots. They think the ends justify the means and have no compunction when depriving others of what's rightfully theirs. "

" The US currently has 109 MILLION acres of designated Wilderness - that's bigger than the state of California - and right now anti-access groups are pushing to close another 35 MILLION acres of land to everything other than foot traffic. Much of this land doesn't even qualify as Wilderness. Individual legal designated motorized trails are being closed left and right simply to quiet the endless whine from the anti-access crowd. When try to use the few remaining trails respectfully & legally, you gripe that motorcycles are too noisy and too dangerous? YOU have 109 MILLION other acres to choose from. "

Wendy wrote on Feb 11, 2010 10:20 AM:

" Hundreds of thousands of acres which do NOT meet the specific requirements to be considered for the Wilderness designation are so designated on an alarmingly regular basis. This is because groups such as yours have deep pockets and loud lobbyists, not because the majority of Americans want it. In fact, it is usually the case (such as with recent closures and current prospective closures in the Pacific Northwest and throughout Utah and Colorado) that the residents in the are affected by the closure DO NOT want it and DO NOT support it, but DO NOT have the cash to fight. " Maybe you should stop looking for a Pacific fisher and watch where your walking. I've lived and hiked in the area for years and usually when I have a miss step it's because I'm looking one way and walking the other. Also you might want to stay away from the river considering all the tripping hazarders you’ll encounter.

I hike and ride on the local trails where permitted. The rudest individuals I’ve encountered are usually from the Sierra club or similar organizations who for some reason consider themselves the sole owners and self appointed dictators of public land. "

" Rain causes ruts not motorcycles. Anytime land without vegetation receives rain there is to possibility of erosion. If the Forest Keepers would do some maintenance on these trails this would help eliminate twisted ankles. By installing water bars and similar erosion prevention, ruts can be minimized. I have also encountered many polite motorcycle riders (Stewards of The Sequoias) doing such mitigation measures, I have never encountered any polite Forest Keepers. If you hear a motorcycle coming, get out of the way, we can’t hear you walking. This should eliminate any physical harm to you. "
