I love Kern Valley

I love Kern Valley, the fresh air is so wonderful. Fishing in the Kern river is so much fun! I have no problems living here, and all the people love to visit because of the lake and the river. That was all the reasons why Kern Valley is such a great place.

The nights after Christmas

This coming Saturday the Compassion Caravan will again pick up food for our friends in need. I’ve been checking the red barrels and it appears that we sometimes forget that people are hungry after Christmas. Please remember your neighbors who are struggling. They count on you and they count on us.

Support from parents appreciated

Kern Valley FFA would like to thank all the parents who donated drinks and snacks for the FFA chuck wagon at the 2009 Kern County Fair. Also to the parents who volunteered their time to work in the chuck wagon. We appreciate you, and without you it would not have been a success. Thank you.

Americans should be number one

Have we as Americans forgotten about New Orleans or any of the gulf coast? Four years after Katrina New Orleans is only a little over one half rebuilt, let along the rest of the coast line. This comes from the majors office of New Orleans, whom I called this morning. I didn’t see any concerts for the city nor any countries sending firemen, medical airplanes, nor hospital ships to New Orleans. Yes what happened in Haiti is awful. But as Americans, Americans should be number one. Donate money to rebuild America, then worry about others. God Bless America.

MLK event meant to celebrate diversity, too
Re: Group reaffirms Dr. King’s legacy, Kern Valley Sun 1/20/10

Regarding the Sun’s article about the MLK event in Kernville on Jan. 18, I regret it did not communicate the event was organized by the KV Progressive Alliance for Change (KVPAC). Also, the event was intended to be a recognition and celebration of cultural diversity here in the Valley and not intended just to be a recognition of Dr. King, Jr.

Random acts of kindness

On many occasions, I have seen, heard or read about things in this valley that have made my blood boil and made me want to publicly comment about them in a letter to the editor. But eventually my anger would cool, time would pass and being a natural procrastinator, I would never follow through.

Lake access for disabled a must

As a disabled person with a fishing license (one of thousands) I’m going to be pretty ticked off if I can’t get down to the lake. If an exception isn’t made for the disabled to be able to get down to the lake side to fish, I will be taking the USFS to court. We need to get together and start a non-profit “Friends of the Lake”  it worked for hot springs.

Negativity has no place

For five years Sequoia National Forest has been working with the public on a Travel Plan to determine which roads and trails will continue to allow multiple use or motorized use. About four years ago in an effort to close more roads and trails, a local group called the Sequoia ForestKeepers started a campaign encouraging people to submit letters telling about conflicts or negative experiences with Off Highway Vehicles.

How to help Haiti:

After disasters, such as the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti, scam operations take advantage of people trying to help. A safe way to help is to take advantage of a trusted organization, such as Rotary International. It is a volunteer organization of business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service, and help to build goodwill and peace in the world with more than 1.2 million members. Immediately after the earthquake in Haiti, Rotary started mobilizing to help Haiti and its 15 Rotary Clubs.

‘Dire straits’ or not keep local Youth Center open

I just found out the Kern River Valley Youth Center on Golden Spur is in “dire straits.” The Board of Directors might have to sell the facility. No more Youth Center? No!! It’s the only place in town that caters to teens for dances, skateboarding and many other events. The building is also available   to rent for meetings, classes, adult dances, dinners or other social functions for a nominal and minimal and small fee. Let’s keep this great spot that is available to the public open for our pleasure. There are no other places like it in the Kern River Valley! Volunteer to assist with the kids after school or at their dances - or rent it!

Business owners beware

I received a renewal notice for my fictitious business name. At first glance it appeared to be from the government and had a California Business and Professionals Code and even a bar code at the bottom. Looked very official. The renewal form had all my business information already pre-filled in and for corrections if needed. My file date wasn’t until July but they were asking me to file by 2-1-10. I thought this a little strange, they have never in the past sent a renewal and so long as you file before it expires there has never been a problem. I was not surprised that fees had more than tripled, since our State/County is in such financial ruin at this moment, I figured they were trying to get extra money from businesses on any renewal of any kind and they were more than happy to remind you it was coming up and you owed it. It even said “Renew Your Fictitious Name with the Kern County Recorder Now”. However in reading the small fine print this letter was not sent from a government agency, but from a service company by the name of Fictitious Business Name Renewal Center. They were kind enough to mention in the small print that this service has not been approved or endorsed by any government agency. The fee for this service is not required to be paid by or to any government agency. They also mention it was not a bill, but a solicitation. Don’t ask me what a solicitation is, for it is not in any of my dictionaries. My guess is they meant solicitation. My warning to all of you is Stop, read the small print And listen to that little voice that tells you something isn’t right. I did and it saved us a lot of money and future headaches.

Learn from history

Why do we set aside a day for a “dreamer” when we roll all of our past presidents into one day of recognition? Probably for the same reason elected officials are permitted to violate the trust placed in them by the voters. It is time to put the tea in the harbor and let the voters regain control.

Listen to customers

We spent four lovely days at Christmas back in Kernville with family, and thoroughly enjoyed the lights and decorations. Especially Circle Park, which seemed to emulate the community spirit we enjoyed while living there for 27 years.
