MLK event meant to celebrate diversity, too
Re: Group reaffirms Dr. King’s legacy, Kern Valley Sun 1/20/10

Regarding the Sun’s article about the MLK event in Kernville on Jan. 18, I regret it did not communicate the event was organized by the KV Progressive Alliance for Change (KVPAC). Also, the event was intended to be a recognition and celebration of cultural diversity here in the Valley and not intended just to be a recognition of Dr. King, Jr.

It was intended to be a secular, not a religious event and using the church facilities did not alter that intention. The event was scheduled for Circle Park but due to inclement weather Pastor Chaffee offered the church facilities and the event was moved to the church - much appreciated by the musicians!

The event was suggested by an atheist and involved the efforts of many persons representing a variety of cultures. We have a wide variety of cultures in our Valley and seldom have an opportunity to recognize and celebrate them. Per my experience, we have Native Americans, Arabian, Afrikaners, African-Americans, Latinos, Filipinos, Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese, Anglo-Saxons, various European cultures (German, Italian, Polish, etc.) and others – plus others of which I’m not aware - and a variety of Christian faiths and Wicca and atheists and other non-believers and persons of various sexual orientations (heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual.)

Hopefully, next year, we can see more cultures represented at the MLK cultural diversity event. Thanks to everyone who participated!
