Americans should be number one

Have we as Americans forgotten about New Orleans or any of the gulf coast? Four years after Katrina New Orleans is only a little over one half rebuilt, let along the rest of the coast line. This comes from the majors office of New Orleans, whom I called this morning. I didn’t see any concerts for the city nor any countries sending firemen, medical airplanes, nor hospital ships to New Orleans. Yes what happened in Haiti is awful. But as Americans, Americans should be number one. Donate money to rebuild America, then worry about others. God Bless America.

" Don't you understand that our compassion is what makes this country the best country in the world. We don't have the suffering we see in other countries because we care to much to allow it to happen. If we were to turn our backs on Haiti in their darkest hour it would be unAmerican and inhuman. "

" Don't you think that life comes before everything else. As fellow humans of a compassionate nature, can you really suggest we just let all these Hatians die because American's come first. Sure we have needs here but they are dieing. We can't save their lives once we get the US settled because they'll already be gone. If they don't get this medicine today, they won't be here tomorrow. If a house isn't built in New Orleans noone is going to die. Build houses tomorrow save lives today. "

" If you want to spend a lot more money on Americans than what has been spent in Haiti, tell your elected reps to cut the military(not defense) budget in half. (It is presently larger than the next nine largest military budgets in the world) We have no enemy who can seriously attack us-except ourselves.
That money would buy health care for all of us, with some left over.
And if your son bought a house way over his school teacher salary, should he be teaching our kids? "

" Let's see, off the top of my head I can think of money and events by Harry Conic Jr., Ellen DeGeneres(natives of New Orleans) and Brad Pitt built houses for hundreds. Many countries came to our aid during 9/11 and Katrina. That's what good people do, help when there is need. "

" Leslie, you may not have seen it but it was there. There was a jazz benefit concert to raise money to help rebuild New Orleans. There is a huge list of music CD's put out to aid Katrina victims. And other nations, some very poor ones, offered the US aid totaling more than $800 million.

When there is a disaster this size anywhere in the world most countries step up to lend aid. Fortunately for Haiti most people disagree with you and their generosity does not have borders. "

" Leslie, socalal and much, why do you limit your "god" to only the USA? How about "God Bless the World"? Why should we have such priority over people who are struggling just to stay alive? Is the gas for our cars more important than the blood running through the people of Haiti's veins? And do you call yourselves Christian? How dare you? I suggest you confess your sin of selfishness.
Mac and Dana excellent points! "

" And furthermore, I didnt realize, "New Orleans --- Haiti ---" had any comparrison to your sons minor difficulties in contrast TO NATURAL DISASTER-CATASTROPHE!!! Theres an old saying, "Be grateful to have what you have!" And I believe we are well aware that we as Americans have been doing this since the beginning of Our countries time. Helping who we can. Because we are capable of it. Thank God were able to help after Tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes,The Holocaust, 9-11. Thats what makes it such a great place to live, to be, an American. Cuz We Can. "

" How fortunate your son is having 2 jobs. How nice it is having student loans, an option to file bancruptcy, social security, disibility, welfare, umemployment benifits, loans of all kinds, bail outs, medical attention, Water!!! How devastating it is our people can complain about what they dont have, might not have, or wish they had; over helping these innocent and helpless people who have suffered this catastrophe. Instead of worrying about what more the gov't can do for us have compassion and think of those who live without all those luxuries we have in every day life. Shame on u! "

" I may be wrong, but I think Bakersfield has clean water and I haven't seen dead bodies piling up and rotting in the streets. We seem to have plenty of food. Your son is lucky to have a job (two even!) and his house still stands. Bankruptcy is nothing compared to losing your entire family and having nowhere to live. I think this is a prime opportunity to look around at what we have and be very thankful for it. "I complained I had no shoes until I saw a man who had no feet". "

We as a Nation need to take care of our own before we try to be world heroes elsewhere. "

" New Orleans --- Haiti --- What about Bakersfield ? My son is a teacher in Bakersfield. He's working two jobs just to pay the house payment. Now he's facing bankruptcy because he is falling behind on his student loans. His mom and I do what we can, but we are totally retired and on fixed incomes. I'd rather see our government begin helping our own people first !!!! "
