Always wear a life vest

Never hesitate to wear your life jacket whenever you are on the water.  Because I hesitated, I came close to losing my life.

Saturday, April 18, while crewing on a sailboat and prior to the start of the race, we were under sail and adjusting our sails.  Suddenly I was accidentally hit by the boom and knocked over the life line and into the cold Neuse River.  Fortunately, I was not knocked unconscious.

I was fully dressed (coat, shoes, etc.) and my clothes quickly became saturated with the cold water.  The weight of the wet clothing made it difficult to keep my head above water.  When I attempted to remove my coat or shoes, I was pulled down below the water and it took all my concentrated energy just to keep my head above water.  Considering where I am in life, it didn’t take long for my energy to be just about depleted.

I am here today, thanks to the guys on the boat who were able to get the boat turned around and to throw me a life preserver and lifeline.  I’m not sure how long I would have lasted, so their quick rescue response was very, VERY important.

Any doubts I may have had as to the inmportance of wearing a personal flotation device whenever a person is on the water, Saturday’s misadventure has totally eradicated!  I have just ordered a belt-type inflatable life preserver and I intend to wear it whenever I am on the water.

My better half has made it clear that if I don’t wear my life preserver while on the water, I could be in danger of her drowning me herself!
