CASA volunteer shares story of hope
CASA volunteer Lisa was assigned to her first CASA case with a six-year-old boy named Edward* that had been removed from his mother and placed in a foster home. When Lisa first spoke with the social worker, she was told that Edward had been placed in many foster homes and had been removed because of his behavioral and destructive behaviors. The social worker also told Lisa that Edward’s grandmother would love to have Edward but she, too, was unable to control Edward because of his destructive behaviors.

6th Annual Kern River Clean Up Day scheduled for July 11
The 6th annual Kern River Clean-up Day is set for Saturday July 11, starting at 9:00 a.m. Participants will meet at the Miracle Hot Springs Raft Launch site. Clean up will be along the lower Kern, from Keysville to Democrat take-out.

County recycling rate at 76 percent
The California Department of Conservation reports biannually on the redemption and recycling rates for each six-month period. The Department is pleased to report that the overall recycling rate for calendar year 2008 was 74 percent, an increase of 7 percentage points over the 67 percent recorded for calendar year 2007. The most notable recycling rate increase occurred in HDPE plastic material, rising 24 percentage points between calendar year 2007 and 2008. HDPE plastic material also had the highest recycling rate of 91 percent.

FRC receives $15,000 grant for dental health
The Kern Community Foundation recently announced that the Kernville Union School District Family Resource Center is one of five community agencies that will be receiving a grant in the form of funds from the Kern County Weingart Funds. More than $63,000 will be split amongst the agencies, with $15,000 going to the Family Resource Center for the provision of dental screenings.

Three receive 2009 Principal’s Award
Jeanette Rogers displays the “Principal’s Award” she recently received from Kern Valley High School Principal Dr. Jeanie Brachear, Ed. D., also pictured. The “Principal’s Award” is given to three individuals each year; a teacher, a student and a community leader. The 2008 teacher honoree is Carolyn Fandino and the 2008 student honoree is Jessica Tyack. Rogers received the award for her service to Kern Valley High School representing the Kern Valley Healthcare District and ECHO Program. She has been the liason between the healthcare and school district since the inception of the ECHO Program.

At Ohio University a study is underway that looks at how an asbestos fiber bonds with a human cell.

West Nile Virus still a threat
Dr. Claudia Jonah, Public Health Officer for Kern County, announced that the Kern County Department of Public Health received confirmation that a mosquito sample in Kern County has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). This is the first mosquito sample found positive for the virus this year. The infected mosquito sample was discovered in a trap located in the 93314 zip code area. An American Crow found near Coffee Road and Hageman Road has also tested positive for WNV.
