All art requires courage

Every year since its inception in 1962, the Kern River Valley Art Association awards a $1,000 scholarship to an upcoming artist who shows not only potential, but individuality. This year is no exception, no matter what the budget crisis is in California. Jamie Johnson, a very softspoken student at Cerro Coso College, was this year’s recipient. Adorned with a two-piece black outfit and three-tone shoulder length hair, Johnson beamed with pride when she was presented the check to continue her studies in becoming a film maker, writer and artist.

Although there is an application process, Jim Davis, the president of KRVA, said, “Jamie came to us, growing in her own ability and art and had shown extraordinary challenges. It gives me goosebumps to grant the award to her.”
