Our Opinion: Keeping the Focus Local

In an effort to strengthen, support and reinforce the community focus of the Sun, letters to the editor that speak to issues of community interest and/or concern or relevance will receive priority for publication. Space for letters to the editor is limited, therefore topics that address larger national issues will not be given the same priority.

In recent weeks some writers have strayed from the purpose of the Sun opinion forum. We are a community newspaper and letters to the editor need to be focused on local interests and issues. Larger daily publications are the avenue for nationally-focused opinion letters.

Before submitting, ask yourself, “How is my topic relevant to our community?” Letters about local events, programs, issues such as the Dam and HIRA fees, etc., are relevant to our community. Personal religious and lifestyle views are relevant only to the writer and not the community, as a whole so will not be considered.
