A SWAT call out to the 8000 block of Harmony Lane in Onyx Thursday night ended without incident after Kern County Sheriff negotiators convinced Anthony Dean May, 42, of Onyx to surrender to authorities.

Deputies from the Kern Valley Substation had gone to the residences located at 8026 Harmony Lane and 8036 Harmony Lane, Onyx, to serve May with an arrest warrant and search warrants for both residences at about 5:30 p.m. Upon the deputies' arrival, May, refused to exit the residence and barricaded himself inside. Deputies said they had received information that May, a parolee, had recently been seen in possession of a .357 handgun. As a precaution, authorities said, a SWAT call out was initiated. SWAT team deputies began negotiating with May by telephone. During the one-hour standoff, deputies said May also spoke on another phone with his girlfriend, who was urging him to surrender.

Finally, May agreed to surrender and was taken into custody without incident. He was booked into Central Receiving Facility (CRF) in Bakersfield and charged with violations including being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of stolen property and parole violations.

During an evidence search of the house, deputies found a loaded .357 caliber revolver and other evidence in the stolen vehicle investigation, according to Sgt. Jason Balasis.

A check of Kern County Superior Court records shows May's numerous run-ins with the law; convictions or 'no contest' pleas include driving without a license and four other misdemeanors in 1989; DUI, carrying a loaded firearm with prior felony convictions in 2005; driving without a license and hit and run resulting in property damage in 2006; and DUI in 2007.

May is currently on a no bail hold in CRF, with his next court appearance scheduled for Monday, Dec. 8 at 9:00 a.m. in Ridgecrest.
