Author J.A. Jance to Headline Bakersfield's 3rd Annual Festival of Books

International literary giant J.A. Jance will join nationally and locally acclaimed authors and illustrators at the 3rd annual Festival of Books scheduled for Nov. 3 at Bakersfield College.

'What better way to celebrate reading than to bring so many great authors together at one location,' said Donna Hylton, executive director of the Kern Adult Literacy Council. 'This has become a signature event for both the council and Bakersfield that is already attracting attention from the rest of California and throughout the Southwestern United States.'

The event, scheduled from 10 am ’Äì 2 pm Saturday, November 3, at the Bakersfield College gymnasium, will feature keynote addresses by authors, local entertainment and book signings. Proceeds from the event will benefit the nonprofit Kern Adult Literacy Council.

J.A. Jance, author of the New York Bestseller Justice Denied, Web of Evil and Dead Wrong is an award-winning American author of mystery and horror novels. She writes at least three series of novels, centering on retired Seattle PD officer J. P. Beaumont, Arizona small-town sheriff Joanna Brady, and Diana Ladd Walker., Jance will be featuring her newest novel, Justice Denied, at the book festival sponsored by the Bakersfield Californian.

Children’s author Myron Uhlberg is a prolific author, having published several books for children: Dad, Jackie, And Me, Mad Dog McGraw, Flying Over Brooklyn. He chooses his words carefully and meaningfully. Most of the storyline is based on some aspect of his life, having been raised by 2 deaf parents. He builds a sense of deep, caring for the characters which will connect you to them.

National award-winning artist and impressionist painter Gita Lloyd illustrated the children's classics Clifford the Big Red Dog, Mickey and Friends, Lion King and hundreds of other children's books for Scholastic Books, Random House, Golden Books, Disney Books and other famed publishing houses.

Bakersfield native Rick Van Horne quickly became a locally best-selling author this year with his first book, Friday Night Heroes: 100 Years of Driller Football, the first comprehensive history of the best high school football program of the 20th century in California.

Cherie Zendarski is the author and illustrator of the children’s book What Bird? and the poetry work My Breath Ballet. Zendarski has been painting and selling her works for¬Ý5 years and writing for 2 years.¬Ý She was featured in Maestri Gallery in Bakersfield, California in the summer of 2004. Her love of children and her passion to create memorable stories that young tots can enjoy for years to come is evident in her latest book.

Rebecca Buckley will discuss her popular works of novels and short stories including Midnight At The Eiffel, Just A Dream, Midnight at Trafalgar Square, and several others, which reviewers say are highly recommended for those readers who enjoy colorful scenes, realistic characters, and endearing life drama.

In addition to the sponsorship of the Bakersfield Californian, Bakersfield College is providing a free venue for the event and also will provide free on-campus parking to festival-goers. Bakersfield's bookstores, including independently-owned Russo's Books, also are among the festival's supporters, as are AERA Energy and Castle & Cooke.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students and $5 for children and can be purchased at Russo's Books, at the Kern Adult Literacy Council at 331 18th St. in Bakersfield or on-line via the council's Web site at www.kernalc.org. Tickets also will be available at the event. At this year's Festival of Books the first 500 people will receive a free book!

The Kern Adult Literacy Council has been providing free tutoring to Kern County Residents for 40 yearsin the following areas: the family literacy program, instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL), General Educational Development (GED), and Adult Basic Education (ABE). The nonprofit council relies on community donations, grants and a diverse array of volunteer tutors.
